KU Libraries Joins International Association of University Libraries

November 15, 2025

KU Libraries has joined the International Association of University Libraries (IATUL), a global organization dedicated to advancing academic and research library services worldwide.

Founded in Düsseldorf, Germany, in May 1955 as the International Association of Technological University Libraries, IATUL began as an international forum for exchanging ideas relevant to librarianship in technological universities. Today, the organization has grown to more than 240 active members worldwide who collaborate, create synergies, and promote innovation in research library services across six continents. Members address strategic issues including information literacy, open access, digital scholarship, and the transformation of library spaces and services.

KU Libraries Dean Carol Smith represented the university at IATUL's annual conference in November 2025 in Shanghai, China, where she connected with library professionals from around the world.

"The IATUL conference has been excellent—action-oriented and centered on research libraries. It's a focused enough group that quality bonds can form,” Smith said. “This membership opens valuable doors for collaboration and professional development."

During the conference, Smith strengthened relationships with colleagues in China, including partners at Zhejiang Normal University (ZJNU), one of KU's priority international partners, and China University of Mining and Technology (CUMT).

The IATUL membership reflects KU Libraries' commitment to global engagement and its position as a leader among research libraries serving major public universities.
