The University of Kansas Libraries' Slavic collection consists of over 300,000 monographic volumes and holds over 3,000 periodical titles, of which approximately 1,250 are currently received. KU's Slavic collection is the major Slavic resource for scholars in the social sciences and humanities in the region.
The Slavic collection has been actively developed since the early 1950's, with some Yugoslav exchanges dating to the 1930's. Along with the acquisition of current materials, substantial collection of nineteenth century materials along with the collection of contemporary publications. Materials are acquired from dealers throughout the world and KU maintains book and serial exchanges with over 160 libraries and scholarly institutions in Eastern Europe, Russia, and the other successor states of the Soviet Union.
The focus of collection development is on Russian, Polish, Serbian, Croatian, and Ukrainian language materials, however all other Slavic, and many non-Slavic East European language materials are also acquired on a selective basis. The preponderance of the collection is in the social sciences, humanities, and arts, with an emphasis on literatures, languages, culture, history, political science, economics, and geography. The first priority of collection development is to support the teaching and research mission of the university.
The KU Library Slavic Collection also encompasses a number of special collections, including: 16th century Polonica; 16th-18th century Slavic imprints with an emphasis on travel literature; pre-Revolutionary Russian pamphlets; a Balkan collection of early 20th century publications on the Yugoslav question; and Russian and Polish émigré literature. The Slavic Reference Collection has been developed at a comprehensive level, and every effort is made to collect the national bibliographies and all other relevant reference sources in the humanities and social sciences. As an aid to patrons, the Slavic reference materials are shelved as an independent collection in the main reference room.
