Bloglines is a free Web based news reader application. In order to utilize Bloglines as your news reader you will need to go to the Bloglines Web site and register for service. Additionally, you will need to go to the Bloglines Web site and login each time you would like to read your news.

This is an screen shot of the Bloglines news reader interface. The right upper panel displays the new feeds you are currently subscribed to. The left upper panel names the news feed that is currently selected. From the drop down menu you are offered a choice of viewing news items presented within various elapsed time frames.

To subscribe to a particular news feed, click on the orange XML or RSS button. In this case we are looking at the New York Times news feed page. Choose the category you wish to subscribe to.

For now we have chosen the Technology category. When you click on the XML button you will be presented with a page of raw code within your browser. Ignore the code but copy the URL.

Within Bloglines, click on "My Feeds" and "Add." You will be presented with a "Subscribe" screen on the right with a box to paste the new URL. Click on the "Subscribe" button when you are finished.

You will see your new subscription appear in the panel on the left. At this time you will also be offered an opportunity to download notifier extensions. Because Bloglines is a Web based application which is hosted online, you will need to install a plug in for your browser if you wish to receive new news notifications.
