The University of Kansas Libraries
Off-campus Access to KU Library Databases and E-journals
Did you know that you can search and use KU library databases and electronic journals when you are not in the KU Libraries? This service is available to all students who are currently enrolled and to all currently employed faculty and staff. If you are not using a computer on campus, you will need to enter your KU Online ID and password to connect to most databases or electronic journals (e-journals) because of licensing restrictions. Please read the Terms & Conditions before using these databases and e-journals.
Library databases and e-journals are easy to find. Use the Articles & Databases and E-Journals tabs on the KU Libraries home page, or the Articles & Databases and E-Journals links on the left of any KU Libraries page.
If you are not a current student or employee, you can still use library databases and e-journals while visiting any KU library branch or campus. If you do not have off-campus access, but think you may be eligible, please review the university’s official policy on affiliates. KU Human Resources (HREO) provides a form for requesting affiliate status with KU. HREO also provides a comprehensive list of affiliations that detail eligibility for campus privileges including off-campus access to licensed databases and e-journals noted as part of the "Libraries Full" service designation.
Additional information about library databases and e-journals may be found in the library catalog. You may want to search there if you don't locate the database or e-journal you need, use the Ask a Librarian service to electronically request help, or visit KU Libraries in person and ask our service desk staff for help in determining what databases are available in your subject area and how they may be accessed.
Technical Tip: If you are current KU faculty, staff or student connections and your connections to electronic journals or databases are timing out, please check your computer’s firewall setting and be sure that port 2048 is enabled. If you are not sure how to undertake this step or make the necessary change, we recommend that you contact the person who provides IP support for your home or work computer.
For additional assistance with remote access or connection problems, contact the Ask a Librarian service. If you are having problems with your KU Online ID, please call or email the IT Customer Service Center (4-8080 or itcsc@ku.edu)
