Serials Review: Spring 2007

February 2007

Dear Colleagues,

I would like to invite you to participate in the Libraries’ 2007 Serials Review, an ongoing effort to assess our current serial commitments and determine if they are meeting your needs as teaching and research resources.

Beginning in the fall of 2005, we worked together to construct a tiered reduction in serial commitments for FY07 and FY08. This year, we will complete this review by implementing the remaining five percent reduction for FY08 as planned.

If budget prospects improve, we will likely be able to maintain this new level of spending without additional cuts next year. However, a steady or declining budget may necessitate otherwise.

We are very sensitive to the issues these cuts pose, and we are committed to working with your area to ensure the best possible outcome. Your library subject specialist will soon contact your department to complete the review process.

In the meantime, please take a moment to explore the updated serial review Web site. The site offers insight into the steps we’ve taken during this process, an overview of issues surrounding the rising cost of serial subscriptions and additional information to keep you informed of our long term efforts in this matter.

We are committed to supporting your teaching, research, and outreach efforts as set forth in the KU Libraries mission. I am grateful for your partnership along the way.

Best regards,

lorraine j. haricombe
Dean, KU Libraries
