Speakers' Biographies

Richard Fyffe is Assistant Dean of Libraries for Scholarly Communication at the University of Kansas. He has an MA in Philosophy from the University of Connecticut and an MLS from Simmons College, Boston.

Clifford Lynch is the Director of the Coalition for Networked Information (CNI). CNI, jointly sponsored by the Association of Research Libraries and EDUCAUSE, includes about 200 member organizations concerned with the use of information technology and networked information to enhance scholarship and intellectual productivity. Lynch holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of California, Berkeley. He is a past president of the American Society for Information Science and a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the National Information Standards Organization and now serves on the NRC's committee on digital archiving and the National Archives and Records Administration.

Holly Mercer is Coordinator of Digital Content Development in the University of Kansas Libraries and community administrator for the KU ScholarWorks program. Her MLIS degree is from the University of South Carolina and she has an AB in Classical Studies from Duke University.

David Shulenburger is Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor of the University of Kansas and has been the chief academic officer since 1993. He came to the University in 1974 and currently holds the faculty rank of Professor in the School of Business. His teaching and research areas are business economics and labor relations, with a major focus on wage determination. He is active nationally and internationally as an advocate for reform in the areas of scholarly communication and academic accreditation. He is past Chair of the National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges Council on Academic Affairs. He received his Ph.D. and Masters degrees from the University of Illinois and his undergraduate degree from Lenoir Rhyne College.

John Unsworth is Dean of the Graduate School of Library and Information Science (GSLIS) at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, where he is also Professor in GSLIS, English, and the Library. He is Chair of the American Council of Learned Societies' Commission on Cyber infrastructure in the Humanities and Social Sciences. From 1993 to 2003 Unsworth served as the first Director of the Institute for Advanced Technology in the Humanities, and a faculty member in the English Department, at the University of Virginia. He holds a Master's degree in English is from Boston University, and a Ph.D. in English from the University of Virginia. In 1990 he co-founded the first peer-reviewed electronic journal in the humanities, Postmodern Culture (now published by Johns Hopkins University Press). He also organized, incorporated, and chaired the Text Encoding Initiative Consortium, co-chaired the Modern Language Association's Committee on Scholarly Editions, and served as President of the Association for Computers and the Humanities.
