Conservation Services

The Conservation Services Department is responsible for performing book repair, conservation treatments and commercial binding on materials from the Libraries' diverse collections. The department operates in two spaces--the Jerry and Katherine Stannard Conservation Laboratory in Watson Library and a smaller work space in the Spencer Research Library.

Conservation Services strives to reach the following goals:

  • Increase access to library materials
  • Perform high-quality conservation treatments
  • Maintain a high level of treatment production
  • Increase visibility of conservation within the Libraries, the University of Kansas, the state of Kansas, and nation.
Assessment of incoming damaged materials
Repair of general collections
Commercial binding of general collections
Conservation treatment of rare books and manuscripts
Conservation treatment of work of art on paper
Removal of dry-mounted, foam backings from poster collection
Housing and boxing rare newspapers
Custom housing of collection of dolls and doll furniture
Custom box for Jayhawk paraphernalia
Disaster response and recovery
Training and community outreach
