Sending Damaged Materials to Conservation

Please contact Whitney Baker or Adonia David with any questions you have about sending damaged library items to the Conservation Unit, or send damaged items directly to Whitney or Adonia with a note explaining your concerns. If you have a large project or procedural concern, please contact Whitney or Adonia and one of them will visit your unit to discuss the matter in detail.

The following procedures hold true for general collections materials sent to the Conservation Unit:

  • Materials sent for conservation treatment may be delivered to the Preservation Department in the same crate as materials sent for binding.
  • The Conservation Unit will treat rush items and return them to your unit within 72 working hours. However, this service can only be offered if it is not overused. Therefore, please do not send more than two rush items per week.
  • Materials that require conservation treatment will be returned to your unit in 4–6 weeks.
  • Conservation staff will determine if an item will be sent to the commercial binder or treated in-house. For cost and efficiency reasons, a commercial treatment is usually the preferred treatment option.
  • If you have specific concerns or require special treatment for an item, please contact Whitney, or write a note explaining your need.
