The University of Kansas Libraries
Moldy Book Policy for Circulating Collections
The Conservation
Unit will make every attempt to salvage moldy books as appropriate. However,
if a book exhibits signs of mold on more than the cover and/or a few pages,
it will be discarded by Conservation and KU Libraries will make every attempt
to order a replacement copy. Mold poses significant health risks for staff
and patrons. The removal of extremely moldy books from the library should
be expedited to ensure the safest possible work environment for all who use
KU Libraries.
- When a moldy book is found, it should be isolated, securely wrapped in a plastic bag, and brought to the Conservation Laboratory immediately. Keeping a book wrapped in plastic for long periods of time will actually encourage mold growth, so it is not advisable to store a moldy book in plastic for more than a few days.
- Conservation staff will assess the condition of the book. If only the cover and/or a few pages of the text are moldy, it may be salvageable. Oftentimes a book in this condition may be rebound.
- If the book is not salvageable, the title page and barcode will be removed. The book will be discharged and immediately withdrawn by Conservation staff following procedures already in place as part of the Brittle project.
- The title page and barcode information will be sent to Retrieval Services where every attempt will be made to order a replacement.
- Exceptions for extremely rare or valuable items may be made on case-by-case basis, recognizing that, ultimately, the health and safety of our staff and patrons is paramount.
- If questions arise or if additional information is needed, the appropriate bibliographer will be contacted.
