Disaster Committee

The Libraries' Emergency and Disaster Planning Committee has worked diligently for many years writing manuals and gathering information to keep the Libraries' prepared to act effectively to protect library staff, patrons, and materials in the event of a disaster. Being properly prepared to cope with a disaster can result in lives being saved and a high percentage of materials being recovered. In a large research library like KU's, where over 90 percent of the collections are irreplaceable, it is imperative that every effort is made to recover and preserve the materials housed in the collections. Experience has shown that the key to effectively coping with a disaster is an immediate and well organized response to the situation by first ensuring the safety of individuals and the protection of the collections during a disaster, followed by purposeful recovery efforts. The Disaster Committee has tried to ensure that the Libraries will be prepared to responded effectively and forcefully to any disaster situation that is likely to occur.
