Crowe announces retirement plans

William J. ("Bill") Crowe, Spencer Librarian, will enter KU's phased retirement program in October 2007. At that point, he will become special assistant to Dr. Lorraine J. Haricombe, dean of libraries.

Crowe has been in leadership positions at KU for almost two decades. He served as dean of libraries from 1990-1999 and as KU's first vice chancellor for information services from 1996-1999.

Since mid-1999, Crowe has led the Kenneth Spencer Research Library staff through a number of changes to promote improved access to that library's renowned collections for scholars, students and the community.

"Bill is a valuable asset to KU, and we are fortunate he will remain an active partner as he enters phased retirement," said Haricombe. "In his new role, Bill and I will collaborate on selected projects that will benefit from his experience and strong commitment to KU and its libraries."

Denise Stephens, KU's vice provost for information services, said that Crowe served as a prominent and national leader in the library profession through his consortia and association work and also as an important leader at KU.

"Bill's leadership played a critical role in early years of Information Services through his work as vice chancellor and dean of libraries," Stephens said. "We are grateful for his service and dedication, and welcome the opportunity to enter this new chapter of his tenure. We are fortunate that he will remain a resource for us as Dean Haricombe's special assistant."

Discussions regarding interim leadership of Spencer Library are underway, and an announcement will follow in the coming months.
