Your KU Online ID is very important, and should never be given to anyone else. You will use your KU Online ID to enroll in courses at NSO. You will also use it to for a variety of computing services such as accessing a computer lab, checking your KU email, performing enroll and pay tasks, or entering the Kyou portal. If you forget the password to your KU Online ID, you can visit KU Online Services Password Management to reset it.
The day after you have enrolled for classes at KU, you are eligible for a KU email account. (It takes up to 24 hours for our system to be updated.)
To get one, go back to KU Online Services and log in with your KU Online ID and password. Follow the instructions to add services, then choose Exchange (KU Email) to create your KU email account. Complete the process, and print out the confirmation page. Once created, your account will be ready for you to use within about ten minutes.
For help, contact the Technology Help Desk at (785) 864-0200.
KU Online ID's are used for various purposes at the University of Kansas. Some of the more common uses include: enrollment information, grades, financial payments, KU Card information, email, and banking information. Passwords are an essential aspect of computer security providing an important front line of protection for electronic resources by preventing unauthorized access. Sharing this information may result in the compromise of your accounts as well as University systems. Account information sharing is also a leading cause of identity theft.
If you share your KU Online ID, you give others access to everything you can access with your KU Online ID. You may even be responsible for anything they do in your stead. Sharing your account with someone else is a violation of KU policy, and may cause you to lose access privileges and be subject to disciplinary actions.
KU has wireless zones in many classroom buildings, libraries, and the student unions. A KU Online ID is required to log in and use the zones.
A KU Wireless Zone is a wireless network connection in which a mobile computer user can connect to the local area network (LAN) by using a wireless network card. The KU Wireless Zones at KU use technology based on the IEEE 802.11 standard.
To use computers in the labs (and public workstations in libraries) you must log in with a KU Online ID.

Information Services (IS) recommends that any system you purchase be capable of running the latest version of Microsoft Office (Office 2007 for Windows, Office 2004 for Mac) and a web browser of your choice (Mozilla Firefox is the recommended browser, whenever Microsoft Internet Explorer is not required).
If you already have a computer, it should run at least Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 2 or Mac OS X, so it can meet basic security, networking, and upgrade requirements, and it should be supported by the manufacturer throughout the rest of your college career.
Some departments or schools may require that your computer have additional features to support work in their programs. Check with your school or department for current information about such requirements.
Be sure to also check out Software @ KU to find out what software is provided and what is recommended. Note: Anti-virus software is provided free so you do not need to purchase this.
