Carl and Margaret Husic Award

to Support Librarianship in Less Commonly Taught Languages



Award amount: $1200 (1 award per year) to support graduate study in librarianship.

This award honors Margaret Kelley Husic and the late Carl John Husic Sr. Mrs. Husic was born in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania in 1931. Mr. Husic was born in Reading Pennsylvania in 1924, and died in Jamison Pennsylvania in 2004. Both Mr. and Mrs. Husic devoted their work lives to the health and ecological sciences, but also have/had a great appreciation for foreign languages and music.

Applicants will:

  • be currently enrolled KU students

  • have had in-depth study in at least one Less Commonly Taught Language (For example, this could be any Slavic, Asian, African, Middle Eastern, Native South or North American language, but will generally exclude commonly-taught Western European languages such as German, Spanish, Portuguese, French, or Italian).

  • have applied and been accepted to a graduate program in librarianship accredited by the American Library Association, See www.ala.org/accreditation.html for information about education for librarianship).

  • submit an application form by April 1, 2008, together with the name and address of a professional reference who can comment on the applicant's potential for success as a librarian, and a 250-word statement for the review committee.

Preference will be given to students whose primary interest is in foreign-language librarianship and Area Studies and who can demonstrate in their essay their intent to use their knowledge of Less Commonly Taught Language in their library career.

Recipient will be announced by the Dean of Libraries by May 5, 2008.
