Committee Reports
University Support Staff (USS) Senate (Submitted by Mary Ann Baker)

  • The USS Senate met yesterday and most of the meeting was spent lauding Mike Auchard and his accomplishments.  There was cake too!
  • We're still in the process of organizing our charges to our standing committees in a formal way.
  • The 2nd oldest ash tree at the corner of Sunnyside and Sunflower has been removed to make room for the larger buses which could have just taken a short different route.  Very sad.
  • HR/EO is doing a self study and is asking our input (that means you, too!) about possible myths or barriers about/to HR/EO.  So you all be thinking about that and let me know if you come up with something.
  • We've made most of our appointments to University committees.  There are some openings on the Senate.  It would be great to have some library companionship on the Senate …

University Senate (Submitted by Mary Ann Baker)

  • The provost will speak at the Sept 13th meeting of the University Senate.  He'll talk about his first year and what comes next.  We might hear some of that at convocation this afternoon.
  • Last week the University Senate reviewed the charges to standing committees.  They are available on the University website under "Governance".

University Committee on Libraries (UCL)

Diversity Committee

IS Professional Development Council (ISPDC)

KULSA 9/4 Meeting update

  • Issue of solicitation via email came up and Donna will clarify with General Counsel.
  • Holiday party consensus to keep on the 3rd floor.
  • Student Picnic now the Administration’s responsibility, not KULSA.
  • Quarterly meetings, more around events/holidays.
  • Officers elected:
    • Al Mauler, Chair
    • Channette Kirby, Vice-chair
    • Denise Swartz, Treasurer
    • Vacant, Secretary
    • Nancy Larsen, cards and flowers

**NEED VOLUNTEERS FOR PICNIC, Sep. 29th 4:30-9:30pm – Food served 5:30-7pm**

Agenda Items for the next Meeting with the Dean
Monday, September 10, 11:00-11:45am

  • Funding for Staff Development Workshop 08
    • Information Services Professional Development Council support
    • Possible alternatives to a day long workshop (ex. ½ day guest speaker)
  • Staff Development funding process
    • Terminology in 8/10 email from Shannon is confusing and misleading.
      • Support Staff who wish to participate in professional development activities may request Administrative funding.   Professional development funds are not for support staff, but this is not explicitly stated anywhere.
      • When you look at the procedures at http://www.lib.ku.edu/staff/docs/Procurement/travproc.shtml you are asked to decide whether your trip is administrative or professional development in nature.  To a Support Staff member who has never requested funding, this may be confusing.
      • Also, nowhere in these procedures does it say that there needs to be a written justification for Support Staff attending professional development activities, which has been required of Support Staff in the past.
  • KULSS Exec would like to see a training session for Support Staff on how to apply for Administrative funds for professional
