Meeting w/Interim Dean
Sue Hewitt and Jana Borchardt met with Julia Rholes and Sandy Gilliland
on Friday, February 28, 2002. Besides talking about Julia's possible
involvement in the General Meeting, we discussed staff development opportunities
and the Classified Senate's exploration of a University or Regents Employee
pilot program at KU. Given the administration's concern in recruitment
and retention issues at the library, they are interested in the Classified
Senate's investigation into the idea of a Regents/University staffing
model. Another point of discussion regarded the three classified employees
who recently changed from classified to unclassified. These decisions
were based upon the need to create some management positions in the
library, and KU Human Resources did in fact become involved in the decision.
Classified to Unclassified
Because of the three employees who recently moved from classified to
unclassified positions, some people were of the opinion that the CCEB
should look at this issue as a possible charge for next year. I.e. what
are the criteria for moving such positions, and are there positions
that can't go from classified to unclassified?
General Meeting
We had a brainstorming session regarding topics to be included at the
General Meeting. Since participation has been down in the CCEB this
year, we wanted to toot our own horn, so to say, and try to elicit interest
in the group for the upcoming election. Our next question became what
have been some success stories from the past years of the Classified
Conference. Mary Ann Baker and Nancy Hawkins volunteered to find information
in the archives that may be of interest to Classified Employees and
Jana Borchardt agreed to put together a PowerPoint with the information
gathered, and other items. We discussed possibly presenting follow-up
information on the Staff Participation document done by the CCEB in
2000, yet determined this was not a good topic for the general meeting.
Everyone did however affirm the idea of gathering and presenting statistics
that would be of interest to CC members. Other basic questions were
discussed including, who would do what, who our guest speakers would
be (Mike Auchard and a representative from Human Resources were mentioned),
as well as where and when the meeting would be. Possible dates were
thrown out as well, with Kurt Blythe volunteering to check on the availability
of the Watson Conference Rooms.
