Science Librarianship Practicum:

A well-documented shortage of science librarians creates a job market with many opportunities for scientifically trained information professionals. Science librarians today are constantly challenged to learn new technologies and employ new tools and resources. The practicum will provide the opportunity to participate in many of the responsibilities assigned to a science bibliographer:  reference, instruction design for a science class, collection development and review, and creation of supportive instructional guides online.

Special skills or interests required:

  1. Applicant should have significant coursework (30 hours) in the sciences, preferably chemistry or biology (It is preferred that the applicant have an undergraduate degree in the sciences). 
  2. Skills in using web authoring software in the creation/development or updating of web pages—these might include Contribute or Dreamweaver.

Focus of the practicum:

Depending on the skills and interest of the candidate and the immediate needs of the librarians, the duties of the practicum students may include:

  1. Assist science librarians to work on a collection assessment for the science and technology disciplines using a variety of tools including, user statistics, holdings data from other peer institutions and standard benchmarks in the field of librarianship. 
  2. In collaboration with each of the science librarians develop “subject pages” which would include links to specific online and print resources in the various subject areas—for example chemistry, pharmacy, physics, molecular biosciences, links to “subject guides” and or tutorials, and information about subject librarians
  3. Reference collection review for various disciplines, (e.g., chemistry or biology or pharmacy);
  4. Collaborate on reference desk shifts in the science library and instruction sessions related to the sciences.
