Reference and Instruction Practicum

Reference and instruction work are integral parts of academic librarianship. Reference experience is very beneficial to have as most libraries require some type of reference work. Instructional experience for MLS students is also extremely valuable.  Coming out of library school, many students have not had the opportunity to practice the skills and techniques necessary to effectively teach classes. Depending on the experience and/or interests of the candidate, the reference and instruction practicum may provide the opportunity to:

  • participate in general instruction class preparation and teaching
  • provide research assistance at the service desks in Anschutz or Watson libraries
  • participate in reference and instruction assessment activities

Preferred skills or interests:

  • Basic knowledge and proficiency in reference skills
  • Experience or interest in presenting information in a classroom setting

Focus of the practicum may include:

Instruction:

  • participation in general instruction class preparation and teaching (ENG 101/102, COMS 130)
  • creation, updating, and copying course guides
  • collaboration and team teaching with librarians to prepare and deliver instruction session content
  • participation in assessment and analysis of instruction activities

Reference:

  • providing reference and research services (in-person, email, and IM/text) at either Anschutz or Watson Service Desks
  • participation in assessment of reference activities assisting in the collection and analysis of data gathered from customer satisfaction surveys, LibStat program and Ask a Librarian
