Shinʼichi Ichikawa
1993. 2 DVDs (178 min.) Region code 2
Call#: DVD PN1997 .U684272 1993
Summary: Ichikawa Shinʼichi, one of the main scriptwriters of the TV drama Ultraseven, fictionalizes the days when the drama was in production at Tsuburaya Production. Disc, 1: "Yume de atta hitobito." In Aug. 1967, Tsuburaya Production has just started filming its new drama Ultraseven. The news of a car accident which involves Ultraseven's scriptwriter and its actress heroine "Annu" causes confusion in the production. The actor playing the protagonist "Dan" has promised to meet his girlfriend to register their marriage, but the delay in the filming schedule makes it impossible for him to keep his promise, which leaves him feeling greatly depressed. Meanwhile, Ishikawa Shinʼichi joins the team of Ultraseven scriptwriters and meets two other writers, Kinjō Tetsuo and Uehara Shōzō. Uehara and Ishikawa are asked to write a script to cover the loss created by the car accident. Uehara struggles to complete his unfinished script, which strongly reflects his feeling as an Okinawan, then occupied by the U.S. military. A college student who is working for Tsuburaya Production is selected to be the new "Annu," and watching her doing her best, the actor playing "Dan" decides to do his best as well. Uehara also finishes his script, which allegorically criticizes Japan-Okinawa relations. Disc 2, "Yume miru chikara." In June 1968, only the final episode of Ultraseven remains to be filmed, Kinjō is having a lot of trouble with the final script. He compares Ultraseven as an alien among the Earthlings to himself as an Okinawan among the Japanese. While watching the surging anti-Vietam war movement and the "Okinawa reversion" movement on TV, he agonizes about his own identity. Meanwhile, "Dan's" ex-girlfriend, an opponent of the Vietnam War, asks "Dan" to help an American deserter to escape. "Annu" decides to rescue the deserter, thinking of him as a space alien in need of protection. Meanwhile, Kinjō finishes the final script, and without telling anyone, leaves for Okinawa, just as in the final episode, Ultraseven leaves Earth to return to his home planet.
