Summary: Daigaku wa deta keredo: Nomoto, fresh out of college, has a hard time finding a satisfactory job, but he tries to hide his unemployment from his mother and his fiancée. When Nomoto learns that his fiancée is working in a cafe to support him, he decides to take a receptionist job which he had earlier turned down. Tōkyō no onna: Ryōichi and Chikako are a brother and sister who live together. Chikako works during the day in a office and at night she prostitutes herself to fund her brother studies in university. Ryoichi unaware of his sister's other life but his girlfriend Harue's brother is a policeman who knows her secret.

Summary: A college student named Watanabe posts a room vacancy note, only to meet a beautiful woman who wants the room. When Chieko moves in, Watanabe moves to his friend Yamamoto's room, but he comes back ostensibly to pick up something he forgot, but in fact he is only trying to be close to her. Watanabe learns that Chieko plans to going skiing in Akakura and asks Yamamoto to go with him to Akakura.

Hadaka no shima = the island (裸の島)

Summary: The sole inhabitants of a small island off the coast of Japan are a farmer, his wife, and their two small sons. The simple, but arduous routine of their daily lives is a constant struffle for survival, of never-ending trips to the mainland for precious buckets of water which must be lugged up the rocky, steep slope of the island and then doled out in cupfuls to the meager crops.

Summary: A gangster named Jōji already has a mistress, Tokiko, who works as a typist. But Jōji falls in loves with an innocent girl, the sister of a young man, Hiroshi, who has recently come under Jōji's sway and wants to join Jōji's gang. Jōji decides he must turm Hiroshi away from the criminal life ibefore it is too late.

Summary: "Wasei kenka tomodachi": two good friends are rivals in love for Omitsu, but she has another boy friend. "Tokkan kozō" (featuring Aoki Tomio a.k.a. Tokkan Kozō): A comedy about a kidnapper and the child he abducts and then can't get rid of.

Summary: In the harbor town of Yokohama, two school girls, Sunako and Dora, are best friends and are always together. Sunako is in love with Henry, but he soon switches his affections to Yōko. Dora encourages Sunako to see Henry, but when Sunako finds Henry with Yōko, who is triumphant over Sunako, she shoots Yōko. Sunako runs away and ends up in Kōbe, living with an artist and working at a night club. When she comes back to Yokohama, Sunako finds Henry and Dora are married. Although Dora and Henry try to welcome Sunako, the relationship among three becomes strained. Sunako, suffering from loneliness, happens to meet Yōko who is in her death bed.

Summary: Okajima is an optimistic young man with a strong sense of justice. After college, he goes to work for an insurance company, gets promoted, marries and has a couple of children. But when he stands up to the company president to help a laid-off co-worker, he gets fired. From then on, things go from bad to worse for Okajima and his family.

Summary: In 1959, Yasujiro Ozu remade his 1934 silent film: A Story of Floating Weeds in color and sound with the cinematographer Kazuo Miyagawa (Rashomon, Ugetsu). Setting his later version in a seaside location, Ozu otherwise preserves the details of his elegantly simple plot wherein an aging actor returns to a small town with his troupe and reunities with his former lover and illegitimate son, a scenario that enrages his current mistress and results in heartbreak for all.
