Chinese
New Year
This festival, which occurs annually in late
January or early February, provides an excellent focus for the
study of the Chinese family, the traditional veneration of ancestors,
the agricultural cycle, and the lunar and solar calendars. Since
an entire unit on China can be built around the Lunar New Year
celebration, this is an excellent resource that provides information
on all aspects on the celebration, including legends, customs,
and a calendar of events which details what takes place on each
important date during the two-week festival. This booklet concludes
with an explanation of Chinese religious traditions and the
Chinese lunar calendar. The booklet provides teacher background
and material for individual projects, with students assuming
responsibility for various aspects of the holiday celebrations.
