      This highly recommended teaching resource is acctually a compendium of seven seperate curriculum units, designed for grades 5-8, but easily adapted to units in grades 1-12.
      The materials were developed by the Greater Chinese Cultural Association in collaboration with the Boston Children's Museum. Each of the seven units has a set
      of student activities and a teacher's booklet providing background information on
      the following subjects:

      Jia: The Chinese Family and Chinese American Families
      Focuses on traditional family values and contemporary Chinese American family relations through stories and role play.

      China and Her Land:
      An examination of the diversity of China's topography, climate and resources.

      Travels with Marco Polo: Life in 13th Century China
      A look, through costumes, painting and stories, at the spectacular accomplishments
      of Medieval China as Marco Polo saw it.

      Fine and Folk Arts of China:
      Background and instructions for calligraphy, painting techniques, papercuts, bookmarking, and personal seals.

      Chinese Celebrations:
      What events are celebrated, how they are celebrated, and the values, traditions and stories behind them; includes an explanation of generational naming within a Chinese family.

      Chinese Architecture:
      A study of how the Chinese design their homes focusing on the combination of family values, ancient environmental principles, artistic symbolism, and economic good sense;
      a diagram of a traditional Chinese home is included.

      Chinese Games:
      Includes directions for Tangrams, Go, Go-bang, and Chinese chess.

    • Journey to China: Activities for Elementary Students
      This collection of activity-based lessons provides materials on Chinese daily life, names, inventions, food, money, proverbs, and games. Twelve slides of a child's daily life in Beijing are included to accompany lesson one. Prepared by a group of California teachers following a study tour to China in 1986, these lessons are targeted for grades
      2-4 but have follow-up activities for grades K-6. 79 pages.

    • Shao Nien Gong -- A Children's Palace: Ideas for Teaching About China
      This excellent collection of classroom activities for grades 1-6 includes materials on China's geography (map transparencies), language, literature, food, crafts, games,

    • Letters From Chengdu
      Written as penpal letters from the point of view of an 11-year-old child, this collection
      of activities on China is designed to make daily life in China come alive for American elementary and middle school students. The letters incorporate hands-on activities, stories, recipes, and a wide range of information about life in China today. The unit was written by Richard Moulden, a teacher who travelled to China on a study tour from
      the state of Washinton, and edited by Mary Hammond Benson from the East Asia Resource Center of the University of Washington, in conjunction with the Washington State Department of Education. The booklet focuses on the city of Chengdu, capital
      of China's largest province of Sichuan, which is Washington's "sister state."

    • Da Tong (Social Harmony): China's Search for Order
      The Fourteen lessons in this unit help secondary students understand people and events of another culture. The unit is organized around a tradition-vs.-change model, investigating how effectively the Chinese dealt with these forces and what influences
      they had on Chinese history. The unit was prepared by Doug Kavanaugh
      of Capital High School in Plympia, Washington (1991) and can be adapted for use
      at the elementary level.

      This teacher's activity packet for grades 1 through 5. complete with a set of slides, introduces children to Chinese painting through the work of Yani, the young girl from
      the People's republic of Chins whose brush paintings of monkeys and lions toured
      the United States in 1989 when she was twelve years old. Emphasis is on the use
      of brush and ink.

    • Out of the East Horizon: Chinese Art from the Seattle Art Museum
      This packet for upper elementary grades focuses on the world of the Chinese scholars. The unit includes 16 slides, a cassette tape of Chinese music, handouts on calligraphy and ink painting, and a booklet with 13 lesson plans for teaching about Chinese art along with literature, history and philosophy. Instructions for papermaking, scrollmaking, calligraphy, and brush painting are in the packet.

    • Traditional Chinese Celebrations: Contiuity and Change in Taiwan
      Designed to offer an introduction to Chinese culture for students in grades 1-6, this unit contains slides of four important Chinese festivals: The Lantern Festival (which concludes the Lunar New Year Festival,) Tomb Sweeping, Dragon Festival, and the Moon Festival. Student activities are discussion questions lead students to identify
      the commonalities and differences between Chinese and American cultural traditions.
      The 16 slides depict the celebration of the festivals in Taiwan, but the introduction

    • Chinese New Year
      This festival, which occurs annually in late January or early February, provides an excellent focus for the study of the Chinese family, the traditional veneration of ancestors, the agricultural cycle, and the lunar and solar calendars. Since an entire unit on China can be built around the Lunar New Year celebration, this is an excellent resource that provides information on all aspects on the celebration, including legends, customs,
      and a calendar of events which details what takes place on each important date during the two-week festival. This booklet concludes with an explanation of Chinese religious traditions and the Chinese lunar calendar. The booklet provides teacher background
      and material for individual projects, with students assuming responsibility for various aspects of the holiday celebrations. Grades 3-9.

      Written by Carol Stepanchuk and Charles Wang, this book provides teachers with an introduction to the many celebrations of the Chinese calendar year, including the Mid-Autumn, the Double Fifth (Dragon Boat), the Hungry Ghost and others. It tells of food, costums, religious significance, song-and-dance performances, and symbolism. The book also provides an introduction to the traditional Chinese wedding.
