Diversity Committee Meeting Minutes 12/3/2003
· All is going well in preparation for the Religious Traditions
Brown Bag Panel that will be held in room 419 (thanks to Channette!) on
December 9th, at 11:30 am. Erin, Julie, and Rose will handle the cookies/desserts,
Sandy will take care of picking up the lunches for the panel members and
getting the coffee made, Channette will bring juice, and Jeff will bring
some form of cheese to balance out all the sweet stuff. Erin thanks everyone
who has helped her out during her stressful hair-pulling time.
· Rose continues to try to get a response from Mary Adair about
the tour of the Anthropology Museum. She will continue to keep trying.
It was brought up that we should possibly consider inviting others along
on the tour when we end up going. The exhibit idea has been put on hold
until spring sometime.
· Recruitment is underway and Sandy will be sending out e-mails
in an attempt to round up some fresh people/perspectives for our group.
· Future Programs:
o Service Animals Program: Perhaps we can work with the Office for Students
With Disabilities to come up with a program that can deal not only with
service animals, but also how the library system can deal with different
situations. We also discussed getting Lawrence Public Library involved
in helping us by showing what they do to deal with the homeless population,
some equipment for users who might need additional assistance, and visual
enhancement items.
o Subconscious Prejudice Workshop: Erin is still trying to get a hold
of Glenn Adams, but most likely this project is going to be put on hold
until spring, when Dr. Adams’s schedule will be better.
o Diversity in Music: Rose has agreed to call and ask about this program
at the Multicultural Resource center.
o Multicultural Dinner: A long-term plan to do a multicultural potluck
dinner at the ECM has been suggested. The event will most likely take
place this time next year. We discussed having speakers, storytellers,
music, and other forms of entertainment to run throughout the evening.
People will be in charge of bringing a dish to share. We would like to
schedule this event after Ramadan and before the Kwanzaa/Christmas/Hanukah
events if possible.
o Cultural Humor Workshop: A possible program to explore humor across
cultures.
Our next meeting is scheduled for January 7th at 2:00 in the Conference
Room. Sandy volunteered to be sure the room is reserved for us. Thank
you!
