Diversity Committee Minutes: 10-02-07 at Annex

Present:  Erin, Michelle, Pamela, Tammy, Shawn, Donna, Jules

Due to other time and workload commitments, Channette Kirby and Sherry Williams will no longer be members of the DIVCOM.  A few other people (from Libraries and IS) who attended the previous meeting may return at some point, but none were present today.

Jules will still act as Secretary unless someone else wants to do it.  We’ve all agreed that we should have a Treasurer for our $1,000 budget, though no volunteers or nominations were made at this time.  This person would likely be the one to work with Denise S. when any budget is used.

Erin announced that as of the first of the new year, she will resign as Chair of the DIVCOM.  She will still be involved as a member, but current and foreseeable workloads are such that even co-chairing will be too much in the future.  Michelle said she would continue to co-chair.  It would be ideal to have co-chairs, one each from Libraries and IS.

Brainstorm ideas for future events/action items—it was brought up again that it would be a good idea to have a diversity/sensitivity training session with new students (and staff?) at the beginning of the school year (or each semester if necessary), or at least with student supervisors for them to talk to their students (this is directed primarily for public service desks, but a good idea for all departments).

Info Matters would like to do a feature on the DIVCOM.  If anyone has a snippet or something positive to say about serving on the committee, please contact Rebecca Smith in the Admin. Office.

Is it possible to use the display cabinets on the 3rd floor of Watson?  It seems International Studies always has something on exhibit, but do they have sole use of them?  This could be useful to put our committee in the public eye.

Diversity team building, with purposely mixed groups.  Could this be facilitated by HR? (Terry P. and others)  Our Yan Koloba game was mentioned again, which could be useful, but not yet shared with HR.  Invite IS *and* libraries to play together.

Another PR idea—DIVERSITY bookmark/brochure with a positive message.  Talk to Rebecca.

Invite Olathe School for the Deaf to learn about deaf community culture, etc.  Is there a  group on KU campus, or does it fall under general “disability?”

Can/should we do an event with Haskell Univ.?  Nikat is contact person.

The next meeting will be in Watson on Nov. 8th 9-10 am

Notes submitted 4 Oct.  Julie Warrick
