Diversity Committee Meeting Minutes: 9/24/03
We elected a new Chair Person: Congratulations Rosanna Hernandez!
We also picked a new Notetaker: Yours truly, Erin Kidwell
Out on Campus Brown Bag Panel:
Overall the sentiment was positive in regards to our first panel discussion.
Many of us felt there were good questions and good discussion. Perhaps
we would like to expand further into Vanessa’s prisoner support
work? Many of us felt the panel guests offered different perspectives
within the panel as far as approaching the issues in differing generations.
About 15 people attended this discussion.
Dr. BeEtta Stoney:
Dr. Stoney will be coming on October 9th to present “Extraordinary
Lives, Ordinary People.” Chantel has offered to be in charge of:
Ordering Dr. Stoney’s lunch, checking to see if she will be needing
any audio/visual equipment, and sending out E-mail reminders to the library
listserv the week before the event. Sandy has offered to send the parking
pass along with the map to Dr. Stoney, as well as check on the room reservation.
There is soda left over from the Out on Campus panel, Channette has agreed
to bring more, and Elizabeth has offered to bring cookies. I offered to
send out the flyer, which was done right after the meeting. Rose offered
to bring the paper products we already have that are currently in Julie’s
office.
Anthropology Museum Exhibit:
It has been mentioned that an Anthropology Museum Exhibit that coordinates
books within an exhibit would be interesting. Rose has offered to call
Mary Adair to get information on how we could go about coordinating this.
It was also mentioned in the meeting that having the books interspersed
with the artifacts in the cases would be ideal and the best use of our
resources. We were unsure as to whether the library still had an exhibits
committee, but we would want to work with them in this project if it is
still in existence.
Dr. Nyla Branscombe and Dr. Glenn Adams:
I will contact Nyla and Glenn in regards to putting on a workshop about
Subconscious Prejudice and the cyclic nature of prejudice across cultures.
I will be checking on the possibility of both of them bringing visual
aids as well as interactive material to engage the audience in the material
on a personal level. We are looking at a time frame of sometime after
November and possibly doing two identical sessions to allow the Customer
Service employees an opportunity to attend one. We think the workshop
would last about 2 hours and are going to approach Stella about endorsing
the program.
Service Dogs:
This subject has been tabled until another meeting.
Other Presentations:
Elizabeth is going to check on setting up a presentation on sexual harassment
with Steve Ramirez. A date has not been set, but we agreed on a 2:00 pm
time for this workshop. Elizabeth is going to check on room availability
and decide on a date.
Channette offered up a suggestion as to a “Diversity in Music”
program.
Channette also suggested a “Patriot Act in Libraries” program
where we would discuss the legal and philosophical issues surrounding
the Patriot Act in regards to how it affects the library system.
Next Meeting:
Rose is going to get in touch with all members of the committee to organize
a time for our next meeting. Be on the look out for e-mails regarding
your schedule.
