Diversity committee meeting notes
19 September, 2005
Present: Erin, Pamela, Michelle, Channette, Julie, Sherry
Michelle has agreed to co-chair the committee with Erin. Yay!
Michelle and Pamela have secured a dvd for us to view for a DivCom event,
“Generational Diversity” which will be shown on Oct. 6th in the
CIC. (we will preview it on the 4th)
A reading group event will be held the following week at the Union (as a
brownbag lunch discussion).
Announcements of these events will be forthcoming.
Discussion of value of using “Diversity Beans” as a training
tool. Is there Literature accompanying the beans? Informational stuff? Perhaps
a speaker from KU (or outside of campus) to coincide? Sherry will look nationally,
Channette, locally.
There was an agreement that the reading group should be an ongoing thing,
not just one time event.
Discussion of the National Diversity in Libraries Conference, which will
occur in 2006. Now is the time to start looking into making arrangement to
go, perhaps present something (in conjunction with someone else, like K-State).
3 other people besides Channette, Erin and Julie should go. (Erin will check
website to see if dates and place are available).
Discussion of educational tours, sponsored by the committee, or in conjunction
with others, of historical sites in our area (e.g. Topeka Brown v. Board of
Education, Haskell Univ., Wilcox collection at SRL, etc.) We would like to
get more involved with student groups as well, talking to panels/organizations
to know what they want/expect from library, etc.
Next meeting to be determined later.
