Diversity Committee meeting notes
7 July,’04
present: Erin, Pamela, Michelle, Julie
and new members, Sheryl and Ana
We started the meeting with an introduction of everyone, to welcome our
new members, Sheryl and Ana.
Our first discussion was about the webpage and our need for a webmaster.
Erin has volunteered to do the work on her own time if someone else isn’t
found soon.
Pamela would like it if “Diversity Committee” could be in
the subject line of related emails. We all agreed and ‘div com’
will now be used.
We discussed the upcoming presentation (July 8th) of the Atlanta trip.
Because of a miscommunication, the flyer for the even didn’t go
out to email until the 7th, so there is the possibility that another presentation
might be scheduled. There was also some discussion of having a digital
camera or camcorder to record events for later viewing for staff who can’t
make it to some events, but would like to know the information presented.
This will be brought up to Sharon. (This would be for all library presentations,
not just one committee).
Erin will have handouts for the Diversity Conference event, especially
outlining the KSU/ESU program. Otherwise, the event is intended to be
informal, to give an overview of what we learned from the experience.
Future plans include our continuation of social events—videos/roundtable
discussions/diversity in music, etc. Something to let staff know we are
an active committee, as well as working towards a long term staffing goal
(which is a little more behind the scenes).
Pamela talked about the Oral History event a couple of months ago. It
was informative and enjoyable and we all hoped we could make it to more
campus events like that.
There as some more discussion about co-operation with Human Resources
and other campus organizations, assessment, etc. that will likely be part
of the webpage. We need to outline what are the needs within our own systems—is
diversity solely along racial lines? Are other diversities considered
in hiring, etc. Sheryl will check the Archives for an official mission
statement for the committee/libraries.
