Notes from Diversity Meeting
June 9th, ‘04
Present: Erin, Michelle, Channette, Julie. Joined later by Sharon and Stella

Prior to the meeting, Erin and Julie looked over some diversity websites at different universities (Maryland, MU, KSU, KU) and discussed suggestions for our website and what we’d like to see included and emphasized.

We shared our ideas at the beginning of the meeting with the others and thought that the top things to be included would be: a calendar of events, which would be linked to other event calendars, so that we would know what was going on around campus, and other sites would know what we have going on at the libraries; an anonymous poll/question featured monthly (i.e.; “What positive/negative experiences have you had at the libraries?”);
In addition to the calendar of events, have links to other campus group websites.

It was decided that we should have a Brown Bag discussion on Wed. June 23rd (11:30-12:30). Erin, Julie and Channette will share their thoughts and impressions of the Atlanta conference.

We were joined by Sharon Bullard, who will join the committee. Erin explained about some of the conference and what other universities were currently emphasizing (esp. KSU and Emporia). We talked about building diversity within library departments, including intellect/experts in certain areas (i.e.; Caucasian expert in Middle Eastern studies) (such as we already have in SPLAT and Slavic).
We also discussed history of diversity at the KU Libraries, including recruitment, ADA compliance etc.
We were joined by Stella Bentley, who gives us full support in our ideas and goals. She will try to steer others in our direction to have a larger (and more diverse) committee. Channette and Erin had handouts about the Atlanta conference and the KSU/Emporia Internship program, respectively, to share.
Diversity should be part of assessment in libraries.
We were encouraged to travel to KSU, with Sharon, to visit with their library diversity committee.
It was suggested that we could use HawkLink to include other multi-cultural programs/populations.
We were given a budget of $1,000 to use for Brown Bag lunches, snacks, popcorn for movie gatherings, etc. (THANK YOU!)
