KU Libraries Diversity Committee's Minutes Archive

February 26th, 2007 meeting
Attending: Erin, Michelle, Pamela, Deborah, Donna, Julie

We discussed expanding on ideas from 2006, putting some into action and reviewing what was done:

-Yan-Koloba game (Human Resources);
-reading group lunch discussions;
-Open House in Spring-use as a forum for new ideas);
-workshop/discussions on advertisements and cartoons, racism and sexism (use resources such as YouTube, possibly KU film dept.);
-Field trip to Topeka (Board v. BoE)-Deborah;
-KS School for the Deaf Museum.

We discussed other ideas and personal experiences: Erin is in a sign language-the final last year and (probably this year) involved going to a restaurant and not speaking.  The wait staff was good, but other patrons acted put-off (at Chili’s).

Geico caveman commercials—are they insulting?  Is there a stereotype being played on that is relevant?

The resident program has resurfaced—the Dean has talked to other heads/lawyers.  Specifics, especially regarding language in the contract is being debated.

Deborah suggested talking to Lewis Duigiud of the KC Star about speaking/doing workshop.
