Diversity Committee Notes
7 Jan ‘04
Present: Erin, Chanette, Heather, Julie, Sandy
-- Welcome to Heather, our new member!
--Signed cards for Sandy (farewell) and Moussa (sympathy)
-- In light of several people leaving the committee/libraries, Erin Kidwell is the new chair; Julie Warrick is the new secretary.
-- Erin talked about the exhibit committee and the upcoming women’s studies exhibit, which we may not have anything to directly contribute, but could maybe ‘tag along’ in the credits.
-- We talked about how we need more people for the diversity committee and discussed who could be asked, who has been asked or hinted to. Heather will talk to Pamela B. and Rebecca C. Erin will talk to new people coming into her department.
--Discussed religious brown bag program from last month. All around positive reaction; especially enjoyed emphasis on togetherness and commonalities rather than differences.
--The spring semester is open for programs. We have nothing solid planned, but we will be looking into several ideas, including: rescheduling Steve Ramirez about the sexual harassment workshop; diversity in music; diversity in humor; a monthly lunch hour featuring ethnic foods from a particular area or culture; a discussion of how students with various disabilities get around on campus and improvements made in recent years (rather than all that still needs to be done to accommodate folks); having a random discussion (possibly brown bag/lunch hour) of a topic ‘pulled from a hat’; something about language and linguistics (Geoff H. could be a resource here)
--- Sandy’s last official workday is Friday the 16th. She mentioned a diversity workshop (geared towards libraries) that Stella sent an email about. More information to follow.
-- We will look into having a program about students and disability for February.
After the meeting, Heather sent an email stating that Pamela and Rebecca
would like to join the committee and that Sandy would be contacted about
the details.
