Responsible Conduct of Research

The Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) program is administered by the KU Graduate School to provide graduate students, faculty, and researchers with guidance on a range of issues, including: (1) allocation of credit for scholarly work; (2) data management and preservation; (3) ethical use of human and animal subjects; and (4) peer review, authorship, and publication. As part of a nation-wide "RCR Awareness" project, the KU Libraries collaborated with the Graduate School and the KU Center for Research to produce a handbook on "Responsible Conduct of Research in a Networked World" and related instruction on issues such as:

  • Internet plagiarism and instruction in the ethics of information use
  • Design of Web-based research instruments (e.g., Web-based and email surveys)
  • Management of copyrights and appropriate use of electronic resources created by others (e.g., digital images)
  • Emerging models for scholarly communication, including use of open-access journals and research repositories
  • Planning for long-term preservation and access to digital information

Requests for instruction or orientation to these issues may be directed to Scott Walter, Assistant Dean of Libraries for Information & Instructional Services.
